Mainstem Malt Becomes First B Corp Certified Maltster

WALLA WALLA, Wash. (September 10, 2019) — Mainstem Malt, a mission-driven craft maltster building high integrity malt supply chains for brewers, distillers and bakers, is proud to announce its acceptance into the Certified B Corporation community.

“It’s an honor to be part of this B Corp movement,” said Phil Neumann, CEO of Mainstem Malt. “As a Washington Social Purpose Corporation, social and environmental progress was already in our DNA. Going through B Corp’s Impact Assessment process has pushed us to take accountability to the next level, with strengthened measurement and reporting to back our claims on environmental protections, empowerment of farmers, and service to our rural communities. We want to ensure that our industry-leading framework for changemaking is preserved as the company scales to new heights in the coming years.”

The B Corp Certification exemplifies Mainstem Malt’s core mission to build innovative malt supply chains in support of family farms, rural communities, and on-farm conservation efforts — starting with water and striving for comprehensive sustainability. A key part of this mission is radical supply chain transparency, inviting consumers to travel upstream from favorite craft beer, spirits, and baked goods.

Alyssa Martinez Neumann, co-founder and Communications Director, emphasized the importance of transparency within the supply chain. “Our customers want to demonstrate their products contain responsibly sourced ingredients, and we are excited to offer craft malt from family owned, dry-farmed, Salmon-Safe Certified farms—all from within the Columbia River Basin. Now, the craft food and beverage industries can source award-winning malt from a company with shared values that benefit both people and planet.”

This certification solidifies Mainstem Malt’s commitment to the highest possible standards in social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability as it joins more than 3,000 other socially responsible companies certified as B Corps, including Patagonia, New Belgium Brewery and Ben and Jerry’s.
